What can I expect at a pulmonary appointment?

While what happens at your pulmonary appointment will ultimately depend on what you are coming in for, there are some routine things that you can expect to happen. As such, your pulmonologist will begin by asking you about your symptoms, with questions including what they are, when they started, what triggers them, and how severe they are. Next, they will likely perform a physical, which will consist of them listening to your breathing, examining your chest wall and rib cage, and other techniques to assess your lungs’ health. A couple of these techniques involve placing a pulse oximeter on the tip of your finger to measure how much oxygen your body is getting, and using a spirometer to test your lung function, in which you will blow into a tube that is connected to a computer. Depending on what they find, they may require further tests to help them make an accurate diagnosis, such as blood work, chest X-rays, CT scans, or bronchoscopy.

It is unlikely that all of the above will take place, but you should expect a combination of a few of the things mentioned to happen. Given the information, they find from the questions, tests, and observations, your pulmonologist will provide a diagnosis, if there is one, and will prescribe a treatment plan for you.
